About Us
The Trust was originally set up in the 1930s as an umbrella association employing district nurses and midwives providing a domiciliary nursing service across all the parishes of Berkshire, as it was then.
With the advent of the NHS this service was no longer required. In 1950 all funds were amalgamated and the Berkshire Nursing Association Trust was formed as a registered charity. This charity awarded grants to Berkshire residents who were in need through sickness or disability, and to previous employees of the BCNA (Berkshire County Nursing Association) who were in financial need.
Nearly 30 years later the Trust received a significant bequest from an estate in Maidenhead. In 1980, with these additional resources, the name of the charity was changed to the Berkshire Nurses and Relief in Sickness Trust, expanding its remit.
Today, the Trust continues to provide financial assistance to those in need through sickness or disability. Our team of 10 Trustees, who review grant applications, have a wealth of knowledge and experience in grant making. They are all voluntary, unpaid members of our board and represent a range of professional backgrounds, including in the health and social care sectors.
